Equivalents II (1992)

An early text-to-image installation where a phrase typed by the viewer generates an abstract, cloud-like image through a Brownian-motion process seeded by the text, paired with sentiment analysis and a word-matching database. Interactive installation with custom software, screen projections and terminal.

Algorithmic Visualization (2002–present)

Images generated directly from mathematical equations rooted in image-processing algorithms, with the referent image left out so the equations themselves, shaped through frequency modulation, adaptive rules, randomness and noise, become the aesthetic object. Dynamically generated animations (size variable) and works on paper (32 x 42").

Kinetic Flow (2006)

A permanent public installation on a tilted 18' x 24' wall above the escalator and staircase at LA Metro's Vermont/Santa Monica station, its modulated sinewave imagery seeded by statistical data sampled from Metro traffic circulation to evoke the downward motion of the descent. Porcelain enamel on steel, 20 panels (18' x 24' total).

Schroud (Fontainebleau) (2018)

Photographs of the Fontainebleau forest, ground of the Barbizon painters and early Impressionists, processed with custom software adapted from Clifford Pickover's noise algorithms once used to enhance the Shroud of Turin, its modulated sinewave amplifying low-contrast boundaries into striking pattern and color. Dye sublimation transfer on aluminum.

Blink (2004–2008)

A real-time software animation of a matrix of eyes that open and close by reading their neighbors' states, cycling between conformity and erratic disorder via physicist Ernst Ising's model of magnetic polarization. Software-generated animation.

A series of computer-generated animations and works-on-paper built from a matrix of cells that switch states by reading their neighbors, cycling between conformity and erratic disorder through physicist Ernst Ising's model of magnetic polarization. Computer-generated animations and works on paper.

Studies in ReTelling (2009, updated 2025)

A computer-generated animation that continuously repacks a set of images of varying sizes into new compositions, so the shifting juxtapositions retell the narrative each time. Inspired by Queneau's multiple retellings, it turns a bin-packing algorithm into a storytelling engine. Two-screen animation. With Angus Forbes.

Anamorphic-Voronoi (2020)

A series of compositions that fold photographs and textures through anamorphic perspective and Voronoi tessellation, extending into Dynamic Confluence, an interactive animation that arranges images in 3D space and generates real-time stereo audio in response to viewers. Works on paper (17x22") or Chromaluxe (variable dimensions); Dynamic Confluence as real-time animation with generative audio.

Phantom Waves (2021)

A series of still images in which oscillations of varying frequencies modulate one another into complex patterns. Works on paper (17x22") or Chromaluxe.
